WEATHERIZATION

The Weatherization Assistance Program has served those in need since 1977. Most of Buffalo's homes were built when energy was relatively inexpensive. Now, those homes cost more to heat than newer, energy efficient homes. Presently, two organizations within the City of Buffalo provide funding for this program- NHS South Buffalo and the Col. Matt Urban Center.

How does the Weatherization Assistance Program work?
First, you must apply to determine your income eligibility. If eligible, your provider will then perform an energy audit on your house to identify its needs. The provider then weatherizes your home, and later performs a post weatherization inspection to assure quality and effectiveness.

What services are included?
weather-stripping and caulking around doors and windows; cleaning, testing and repairs of heating systems; the addition of insulation to walls and ceilings; minor repairs, as needed, to ensure maximum efficiency from weatherization services performed.

Is there a charge for Weatherization services?
We provide all services without charging the home's occupant. However, owners of rental properties must invest funds towards the cost of the weatherization process.

Are renters eligible for services?
Yes, renters qualify if they meet the eligibility guidelines.

What are the income eligibility guidelines?
Eligibility is based on household income relative to low-income guidelines. If a household conatains a member who receives SSI, public assistance, food stamps or HEAP benefits, the household is considered automatically eligible for weatherization services.
